Short answer: Newborn photos are best taken 5 to 14 days after birth, while babies are still sleepy and curl easily, so book your photographer in the second trimester and let them pencil you in by your due date. Maternity photos are best at about 28 to 35 weeks. In Surrey and Metro Vancouver, published newborn prices run from about $175 for a short or mini session to around $950 for a premium studio collection, and most families spend $300 to $600. Booking maternity and newborn together often gets you a bundle discount.
This guide is for expecting parents in Surrey, White Rock, Langley, Burnaby, Vancouver and the North Shore. It explains when to book, studio versus in-home sessions, what newborn photography really costs in 2026, how good photographers keep babies safe, the questions to ask, and the local newborn and maternity photographers listed on KidsServiceHub.

When to book a newborn photographer
Book in your second trimester, ideally by about 28 weeks. Newborn photographers can only take a few babies a week, and they hold a spot based on your due date and confirm the exact session day once your baby arrives. Message them within a day or two of the birth.
- 5 to 14 days old is the window for classic posed newborn photos, when babies sleep deeply and are comfortable curled up. Kari Lynn Photography recommends booking newborn lifestyle sessions within the first two weeks after birth.
- After about three weeks, babies are more awake and less flexible, so a relaxed lifestyle or “baby and family” session usually works better than sleepy wrapped poses.
- Early arrivals, NICU stays, jaundice or a C-section recovery are common; a good newborn photographer will reschedule without penalty. Ask about the policy before you pay a deposit.

When to take maternity photos
Most photographers recommend 28 to 35 weeks, when the bump is clearly visible but you are still comfortable moving around; Kari Lynn Photography suggests 32 to 35 weeks. If you are expecting twins or have a higher-risk pregnancy, aim for the earlier end. Plan outdoor sessions around Metro Vancouver’s light: golden hour in summer is late evening, while from November to February a studio or a midday session is more reliable.
Bundling saves money and admin. Lux Portraits by Pavan notes that its in-studio maternity sessions are often booked alongside a newborn session, and many photographers discount the newborn session when you book both.
Studio, in-home lifestyle or outdoor: which style suits you?
| Style | What it looks like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Posed studio | Wrapped and posed baby, props, backdrops, controlled warm room | Classic newborn portraits, wall art, families who are happy to travel at about 1 week postpartum |
| In-home lifestyle | Natural, unposed moments in your nursery, bed or living room | Families who want real-life images and do not want to leave home with a newborn |
| Outdoor | Natural light in a park, beach or field | Maternity sessions and older babies; newborn outdoor sessions only in mild, dry weather |

What newborn photography costs in Surrey and Metro Vancouver (2026)
Newborn sessions cost more than a regular family session because they take longer (often 2 to 3 hours, with breaks to feed and settle), need a heated studio and props, and require specialist posing and safety training. Here is what each level usually includes:
| Level | Typical price | What is usually included |
|---|---|---|
| Mini or short session | About $175 to $330 | 30 to 60 minutes, one or two setups, baby only, around 3 to 10 edited images |
| Standard newborn session | About $350 to $600 | 1 to 3 hours, parents and siblings included, several setups, about 15 to 25 edited images |
| Full or premium collection | About $600 to $950+ | Unhurried baby-led session, all wardrobe and props, 30+ edited images, sometimes prints or an album |
| First-year package | Varies | Newborn plus milestone sessions (often around 3 to 4, 6 to 7 and 12 months), usually at a bundle price |
Published starting prices from photographers on KidsServiceHub:

When comparing quotes, check how many edited images are included, whether you get a digital download with a print release, whether parents and siblings cost extra, and whether GST is included.
Newborn photo safety: what a good photographer does
A newborn session should be baby-led: the photographer follows your baby’s cues and stops for feeds and cuddles. Signs you are in good hands:
- The room is kept warm and the photographer washes or sanitizes their hands before handling your baby.
- Tricky-looking poses, such as the “froggy” chin-on-hands pose or a baby in a hanging basket, are composites: two or more photos taken while a parent or assistant supports the baby, then blended together. Your baby is never balanced unsupported.
- Baby is never left alone on a posing beanbag or prop, and a spotter’s hand stays close in any elevated setup.
- Props are sturdy and weighted, with no glass, heaters or loose small parts near the baby.
- The photographer will happily skip any pose you are not comfortable with.
Ask where they trained in newborn posing and safety, and how they handle a baby who will not settle. If a session runs long, you are always allowed to stop.
Questions to ask before you book
- How do you hold a spot for my due date, and what happens if the baby comes early or late?
- Is the session in your studio, in my home, or outdoors, and how long does it usually last?
- How many edited images are included, and can I buy more?
- Do I get digital files with a print release, or are prints and albums sold separately?
- Are parents and siblings included, and is there a sibling or pet fee?
- Do you provide wraps, outfits and props, or should I bring anything?
- What is your rescheduling policy for illness, a NICU stay or a C-section recovery?
- Do you offer a maternity and newborn bundle or a first-year milestone package?
How to prepare for a newborn session
- Feed your baby just before the session or on arrival; a full, sleepy baby is the easiest to photograph.
- For in-home sessions, warm the room, open the curtains, and clear clutter from the bed or nursery.
- Choose plain, neutral outfits for parents in soft tones, and avoid big logos or busy patterns.
- Bring a pacifier if you use one, plus extra diapers, wipes and a change of clothes for you.
- Photograph siblings first, while they are fresh, then let them leave with another adult.
Milestone sessions in the first year
Many families book a few short sessions after the newborn shoot: around 3 to 4 months for smiles and tummy time, a sitter session at 6 to 8 months once the baby can sit unassisted, and a cake smash at 11 to 12 months. Gemini Visuals and Photographybyharmeen both photograph first birthday cake smashes, and our first birthday party guide covers smash cakes, decor and venues. For family photos later in the year, see our fall and holiday mini session guide.
New parents also need paperwork done in the first weeks: our BC newborn documents checklist and newborn passport guide walk through the deadlines. The passport photo, by the way, has to be taken by a commercial passport photographer to Passport Canada’s specifications, so it is a separate appointment.
Frequently asked questions
When should newborn photos be taken?
Posed newborn photos are best taken when the baby is 5 to 14 days old, while they are sleepy and comfortable curled up. After about three weeks, a relaxed lifestyle session usually works better than wrapped, posed shots.
How much does a newborn photoshoot cost in Surrey, BC?
Published prices in Surrey and Metro Vancouver run from about $175 for a short or mini session to around $950 for a premium studio collection. Most families spend $300 to $600 for a standard session with parents and siblings included.
When should I book a newborn photographer?
Book during the second trimester, ideally by about 28 weeks. The photographer reserves a spot by your due date and sets the exact session day after your baby is born, so contact them within a day or two of the birth.
When is the best time for maternity photos?
Between about 28 and 35 weeks of pregnancy, when your bump is clearly showing but you are still comfortable. Aim earlier if you are expecting twins or your pregnancy is higher risk.
Can I have newborn photos taken at home?
Yes. In-home lifestyle sessions are common in Metro Vancouver and capture natural moments in your own space without travelling with a newborn. Photographers such as Kari Lynn Photography work on location.
Are posed newborn photos safe?
They are when done by a trained newborn photographer. Difficult-looking poses are composites made from several supported photos, the room is kept warm, and the baby is never left unsupported or alone on a prop.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
Newborn photographers book by due date and expect babies to arrive on their own schedule. Let them know as soon as your baby is born; most will move the session for an early arrival, a NICU stay or a C-section recovery.
Should I book maternity and newborn photos together?
Booking both with the same photographer often saves money through a bundle discount, guarantees your newborn spot early and gives your images a consistent look.
