Bright Nights has moved to Surrey
The Bright Nights light display, a Stanley Park fixture for decades, now runs at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds as part of the Noel Holiday Light Festival & Market. For anyone south of the Fraser this is a straight upgrade: no bridge, no downtown parking, and the drive is fifteen minutes instead of an hour.
The site is at 17905 62 Avenue, Cloverdale. Millions of lights form a walking loop around the pond with light tunnels and oversized illuminated animals, alongside a Ferris wheel, roaming characters and a Christmas market. Parking is free and attendants direct you to the nearest lot, with accessible parking available.
Practical notes worth knowing before you go:
- Everyone needs a ticket, including children six and under — their tickets are free, but you have to claim them in advance rather than turning up with a toddler and assuming.
- It closes on scattered dates through the run, not just Christmas. Check the calendar for the specific evening you want.
- Paths are fully paved and indoor areas are flat concrete, so strollers, wheelchairs and assistive walkers are all fine. Access2 cards are accepted.
- Proceeds go to the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.
Meanwhile Stanley Park has gone in a different direction, hosting a Harry Potter forbidden-forest walk rather than the Christmas train. If your family tradition was the Bright Nights train specifically, that is the change to know about.
Free Christmas things to do with kids
Surrey Tree Lighting Festival — November 21–22
Free, at Surrey Civic Plaza, 12pm to 8pm on both days. The Mayor and Council light a 60-foot tree, there is a holiday market, entertainment through the day, and for this year a new outdoor ice rink. This is the single best-value family day in the Surrey Christmas calendar and it is the third weekend of November, before everything else starts.
Burnaby Village Museum Festive Village
Gate admission is free across the ten-acre heritage site — lights and decorations throughout, carol singers, roving entertainers, Father Christmas and a scavenger hunt. The 1912 carousel is the only paid item at $2.71 plus tax a ride. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing, and it typically closes December 24 and 25 while staying open on New Year’s Day. Evenings after mid-December are the atmospheric ones.
Other free options
- Neighbourhood light routes. Every part of Surrey has a street that goes overboard. Drive it in pyjamas with hot chocolate — for under-sixes this competes surprisingly well with a ticketed display.
- Library programs. Surrey Libraries run free holiday storytimes, crafts and family events through December, sorted by age.
- Mall Santa photos. Seeing Santa is free at most malls; you only pay if you want the photo package. Ask about sensory-friendly or quiet sessions, usually held on a weekday morning early in the season.
- Community centre drop-ins and neighbourhood association events, posted on individual centre pages rather than the main calendar.
- Christmas Eve and Day services with children’s programming, at churches and gurdwaras across the city.
The ticketed light displays
- VanDusen Festival of Lights — November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. A million lights through the botanical garden, with a dancing-lights pond show. The most walkable of the big displays for a young child, and the least weather-dependent because you are moving the whole time. Prices are published closer to opening; the admission desk is 604-257-8463.
- Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge — the suspension bridge, treetops walk and cliffwalk lit up. Spectacular, and the same accessibility caveat applies as in daylight: a nervous child on a swaying bridge in the dark is a different experience from the photos.
- The Peak of Christmas at Grouse Mountain — sleigh rides, a light walk and Santa at the top of the gondola. The most expensive family day on this list once the gondola is included, and the one most affected by weather.
- Noel Holiday Light Festival with Bright Nights — Cloverdale, as above. The best value for a South Fraser family once you count the fuel and the parking you did not pay for.
If you are only doing one ticketed display, pick by age: under five, VanDusen or Noel; six to ten, Noel for the Ferris wheel and market; eleven and up, Canyon Lights.
The Vancouver Christmas Market — and the two dates to diarise
November 16 to December 24, 2026, at Jack Poole Plaza. German-style market with a carousel, food stalls and an enormous number of people. Two on-sale dates matter:
- Season passes go on sale September 21, 2026.
- General admission presale opens October 2, 2026.
Opening hours shift through the run: 4:00–9:30pm on weekdays and 11:30am–9:30pm at weekends from November 16 to December 3; 11:30am–9:30pm Sunday to Thursday and to 10:00pm Friday and Saturday from December 4 to 18; daily 10:00am–10:00pm from December 19 to 23; and 11:30am–8:00pm on December 24.
With small children, go on a weekday afternoon in the first two weeks. December weekend evenings are shoulder-to-shoulder, which with a pushchair is genuinely unpleasant and is the source of most of the market’s bad reviews.
Covering the break: December 21 to January 1
Surrey students are off from December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027. For working parents that is roughly seven working days to cover, several of which fall on statutory holidays when nothing is open.
- City of Surrey winter break day camps run in the weekdays around the holidays — book them in November, not December.
- Skating and swimming at the rec centres run holiday schedules with extra public sessions; check times rather than assuming.

- December 25 and 26 and January 1 — assume everything is shut and plan those as home days.

Santa photos, and doing them well
- Book the first session of the day in the first two weeks of December. Queues in the third week are 45 minutes and children peak long before the front.
- Ask about sensory-friendly sessions. Most malls run at least one quiet session with no music, dimmed lighting and no queue — usually a weekday morning early in the season, and rarely advertised well.
- Under-twos do better held by a parent in frame than sat alone on a stranger’s lap. Photographers will do it if you ask.
- Seeing Santa is normally free; the package is what costs. Nobody minds if you say hello and skip the print.
Cutting your own Christmas tree
Several Fraser Valley farms switch from pumpkins to Christmas trees in late November, including Aldor Acres in Langley, which runs the pumpkin patch through October and Christmas trees afterwards. A u-cut farm is a two-hour outing for the price of a tree you were buying anyway, and it is the cheapest “event” on this page.
